weMED clinic’s experienced doctors utilize the best of eastern and western knowledge to help children aged 1 months to 18 years. Such an integrative approach will decrease use of medications, side effects from medications, length of illness, and days missed from school.
Is Acupuncture painful, and how long is the treatment course?
Acupuncture is usually not painful because the needle is only as thick as a human hair and solid. For kids under 5, we will most likely not use more than 3 needles in total, and the whole course of treatment may last about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
Are Chinese Herbs Safe?
Compared to medications, Chinese herbs, after over 5,000 years experience on human subjects, are considered the safest healing substances to put into our bodies. They are regulated by the FDA as nutritional supplements. The application of such herbs has to be supervised by licensed acupuncturists, and weMED’s doctors are also MD’s (China) who will make sure the herbs will not interact with any medications your child may be taking.
Is There Research?
Yes! One research study was conducted at Harvard-affiliated Children's Hospital in Boston by Yuan-Chi Lin, M.D., an anesthesiologist who specializes in pain management in children.
Dr. Lin's study included 243 youngsters aged 6 months to 18 years who were being treated for headaches, stomachaches, back pain and other chronic complaints that often caused them to miss school. When the study began, the young patients rated their pain as an "eight" on a scale of ten. (One of Dr. Lin's methods of demonstrating to the kids that the needles won't hurt is by inserting them first in the children's parents.) When the study was over, the average pain rating among the youngsters was a "three." The children also reported missing less school, sleeping better, and participating more in extracurricular activities as a result of treatment.
